The night before the Lantern Festival

Once a year, the people of Lantern Valley float paper lanterns on the lake to thank the old things that served them. Ten years ago they stopped. The mana gathered in the spring by the hilltop chapel, and this autumn it spilled over.

Now thousands of old things are waking at once. Jugs run away from kitchens, mine carts roll out of the crystal mine and old brooms make mischief in town. These wakelings aren’t bad, just overflowing: release their extra mana and they settle down. Night after night they come down the roads, and the heroines meet them at the town gate.

How it plays

Numbers are how the game shows released mana. One drag, one release, and a few seconds of mana going off on the board.

  1. Cast a volley

Drag up and release: your heroine casts a volley of mana orbs that bounce off the walls and the wakelings.

  2. Mana flies on

Every hit releases mana as a number, and each further hit by the same orb is bigger. Released mana flies on by itself and hits the next wakeling.

  3. Overflow

Colliding numbers merge in your heroine’s way. At 50 the mana bursts and calms the wakelings around it. Three overflows charge the heroine’s flourish: every number on the board doubles.

A 2.5D meadow board at dusk: wakelings of mossy stone and clay jugs with health plates stand on stone slabs among grass and flowers, in front of the town gate. In the foreground a heroine seen from behind casts glowing mana orbs, and pixel numbers fly above the board: 2, 6, a golden 18 and a pink overflowing 50. Town gate 53 34 40 51 35 50 22

Four heroines

All four are grown-ups with a trade, from three lands and the valley itself. Each one merges mana in her own way.

  • Shiori, a mage with spiky silver hair, a blue robe with wide sleeves and a staff topped with a glass orb.

    In the free game

    Shiori

26, a wandering mage from the Isles of Mist

Her mana gathers like mist: colliding numbers add up.

  • Harin, a grinning archer with an orange ponytail, a green hooded cape and a quiver of arrows.

    In the free game

    Harin

24, an archer from the Pine Highlands

Her mana carries like a mountain echo: numbers up to 9 multiply, bigger ones add up.

  • Lian, a calm scholar with long blonde hair in a cream robe, holding a leather-bound book.

    In the full version

    Lian

29, a scholar and chronicler from the Jade Rivers

Her mana works like brush writing: merged numbers add up with one extra stroke, and a prime number hits a second wakeling.

  • Rika, a blacksmith with a teal topknot, a leather apron and one steel shoulder plate, holding a hammer.

    In the full version

    Rika

27, a blacksmith from Lantern Valley

Her mana tempers like folded steel: a power of two doubles on every bounce.

One night, 2–3 minutes

  • 15 waves

Wakelings come down the road in waves. Three lanterns hang at the town gate, and every wakeling that gets through puts one out.

  • Talismans

After waves 3, 6, 9 and 12, pick one of three paper talismans: an extra orb, springy walls, a lower overflow threshold, a lucky seven and more.

  • Chapters

The meadow, the crystal mine and the night forest by the lake, each ending with a bigger wakeling, and the finale at the spring.

  • Bond and gallery

Your bond with each heroine grows after every night, whatever the result, and reveals her illustrations and short scenes in the teahouse.
